Set your starting ranking if you want to play in the Ladder. If you have a chess.com Rapid ranking, this is a good level to start with. If you have no experience of ELO follow the following guideline:

Very rarely blunder = 1200
Rarely blunder = 1000
Occasionally blunder = 800
Frequently blunder = 600

Don't worry about getting this exactly right. It's only a rough starting point. As you play games, the system will adjust your ranking and it will find its proper level.

Chess In Reading is a free, non-commercial platform run by volunteers. It exists to help chess players in Reading, UK find opponents and arrange over-the-board games.

2. No Warranty

The service is provided “as is” without warranty of any kind. We are enthusiastic amateurs, not a company. We do not guarantee that the platform will be available, error-free, or uninterrupted.

3. Limitation of Liability

We do not accept any responsibility or liability for any loss, damage, injury, or harm — whether direct, indirect, or consequential — arising from your use of this service. This includes, but is not limited to, meetings arranged through the platform, inaccuracies in ratings or results, and loss of data.

4. Your Responsibility

You are responsible for your own safety when arranging and attending games. You should meet in public places and take the same precautions you would for any in-person meeting with someone you do not know well.

5. Conduct

You agree to behave respectfully toward other players. Abusive, threatening, or dishonest behaviour (including deliberate misreporting of results) may result in your account being suspended or removed without notice.

6. Your Data

We store your email address, display name, rating, game results, and availability preferences. This information is visible to other registered users. We do not sell or share your data with third parties. You may request deletion of your account and data at any time by contacting an administrator.

7. Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time. Continued use of the service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.

8. Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

Challenging an Opponent

First use the messaging tool to propose and agree the details of the match with your opponent: date, time, place and whether they agree with your proposed rules.

When you are agreed, click "Schedule" and you can schedule the game in the system. You'll both get an email invite.

If you've already agreed these details offline, just go straight to "Schedule" to setup the game.
